At the Oceanology International Americas 2001 meeting in April 2001, the ad hoc Advisory Group for IOCARIBE-GOOS convened a symposium on ocean observations in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, described below:
CARIBBEAN/GULF GLOBAL OCEAN OBSERVING SYSTEM MEETING

IOCARIBE (IOC Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions) GOOS announces the first conference on ocean observing systems for the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The organization, formed at the 20th Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in June 1999, is a regional component of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). At OI Americas, the IOCARIBE GOOS Advisory Group will present "The Case for IOCARIBE GOOS," an assessment of regional needs, a summary of existing programs, and a preliminary strategic plan for the development of IOCARIBE GOOS. Advisory Group co-chairman W. Douglas Wilson said, "to celebrate the beginning of this program, and to aid scientists, planners, agencies, and other interested parties in its further development, we invite presentations on all aspects of operational oceanography in the Caribbean and adjacent regions for a conference to be held concurrently with OI Americas 2001."
